Mike Wingo

Mike has performed professionally since 1976 in a wide range of musical genres including jazz, blues, orchestral, electro-acoustic improvisation, and Balinese gamelan.

Mike moved to the Durango area from Washington, DC in August of 2022 and is delighted to be teaching at Stillwater. He has performed professionally since 1976 in a wide range of musical genres including jazz, blues, orchestral, electro-acoustic improvisation, and Balinese gamelan. Mike’s most recent critically acclaimed recordings include “A Different Beat”, a double CD with the Brazilian jazz quartet Batida Diferente and “Pathways”, a duo with pianist Dave Anderson. Mike has taught private percussion lessons and conducted ensembles for decades, most recently teaching out of his home studio in Washington.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Percussion Performance from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master of Music degree from SUNY Stony Brook where he studied percussion, composition, electronic music, and conducting.  Mike’s principal percussion teachers included the legendary Murray Spivack, as well as Walt Goodwin and Ray DesRoches.
